Terry and Lori Mitzel have lived in Hillsboro for close to 14 years, but the couple hadn’t met Lois Smith before Saturday.

That didn’t stop the Mitzels and their sons from raking leaves in Smith’s yard along Fourth Street Southeast over the weekend.

Armed with rakes and a leaf blower, the Mitzels joined more than 60 others who fanned out across Hillsboro on Saturday morning to take part in a citywide day of service.

For nearly three hours, volunteers banded together to pick up trash, rake leaves, pack meals for African school children and write thank you letters to first responders.

“We thought this would be good for the kids to learn to help others and to donate their time,” said Lori Mitzel, taking a breaking from raking Smith’s lawn.

“As soon as we heard about this we thought it would be good for our family to do.”
