Administrators in the Hillsboro School District on Tuesday asked parents impacted by the partial government shutdown to consider applying for the school’s free- and reduced-price lunch program for their kids.

Superintendent Paula Suda told the Hillsboro School Board on Thursday that 32 percent of families in the district have signed up for the program during the school year.

That number could climb if parents in the district have been sent home from work due to the federal shutdown, which marked its 20th day on Thursday with no pending budget deal in sight.

The shutdown has impacted federal offices ranging from the Farm Service Agency to the National Weather Service to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
