A natural gas distribution company based in Le Sueur, Minn., has set its sights on bringing natural gas to homes and businesses in Hillsboro within two to three years.

Greg Palmer, chief executive officer of Dakota Natural Gas, said the investor-owned company has been asked to conduct a market study to determine how many businesses and homeowners in Hillsboro would sign up for natural gas.

If the results of the study are promising, Dakota Natural Gas could build a pipeline extending west from Beltrami, Minn., to Hillsboro as soon as 2020, although 2021 would be more likely, Palmer said.

And if Hillsboro proves to be a viable market, the company may look to expand its pipeline to Buxton and Mayville.
