Hillsboro High School senior Hannah Mueller and 22 classmates with their sights set on college received early graduation presents Wednesday.

The H509 Hillsboro Dollars for Scholars chapter awarded $80,500 in scholarships to seniors Wednesday prior to commencement ceremonies May 26.

Chapter President Jim Murphy told students huddled in the Hillsboro High School gym that the scholarship foundation handed out one $200 award in its first year in 1987.

Thanks to donors, the foundation’s scholarship endowment has grown to $2 million, allowing Hillsboro’s 23 seniors to take home an average of $3,500 in scholarships this year.

“Everyone who applies gets something,” Murphy said. “This is a big deal.”

Mueller led all scholarship winners Wednesday by pocketing $5,800 in financial aid.

The Hillsboro co-valedictorian said she was proud to be selected by the Dollars for Scholars chapter as this year’s winner of the $250 Earl and Barbara Mueller Scholarship.
