Officials flying into Hillsboro for the governor’s Main Street Initiative visit Tuesday made a historic landing at Hillsboro Regional Airport.

Paul Lucy and Zoe Wergeland of the Department of Commerce and Kyle Wanner, director of the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission, were the first passengers to touch down on the airport’s new runway, which opened Tuesday.

Airport officials shut down the facility for the summer in May as part of a $7 million project to build a concrete runway and install LED landing lights at the airport.

The upgrades received rave reviews from Gov. Doug Burgum’s staff visiting the city.

“Here in Hillsboro you have an incredible airport,” Wanner told a crowd inside the Hillsboro Events Center.
