A guide to celebrating the season with local events

Residents in eastern Traill County will have plenty of opportunities to celebrate Christmas at a series of holiday events coming up in December.

Mayville State University’s music department will host a winter concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2 in the MSU Classroom Auditorium.

The event will feature performances by the MSU concert band, jazz ensemble and concert choir. There is no charge to attend. Other holiday-themed festivities on the December docket include:

  • Hillsboro High School’s annual Christmas concert will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 6 in the high school gymnasium.
  • Central Valley School’s Christmas concert will be held in the school’s north gym at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6.
  • Reynolds Community Betterment will celebrate the season with its annual Christmas party at Reynolds City Hall on Saturday, Dec. 8. The gathering will include games, activities, a movie, photos with Santa Claus and horse-drawn wagon rides around town starting at 5 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to wear festive clothing. Admission is $1
  • The Hillsboro Business Association’s annual Christmas carnival will run from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9 at the Hillsboro city armory. Events planned include carriage rides, bounce houses, kids crafts and a visit from Santa starting at 12:30 p.m. Lunch will available for purchase from St. Rose of Lima Catholic Youth. Admission is $1 or a donation to the local food pantry.
  • United Valley Parish will host its eighth annual Christmas in the Barn at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9 at Jeremy and Dawn Paulsrud’s barn in rural Hillsboro at 17379 6th St. S.E. along County Road 2.
  • Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hillsboro will host its annual Community Christmas Concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9.
  • The Blue Christmas Veterans Remembrance Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10 at Hatton Prairie Village in Hatton. The service is held in remembrance of veterans and in support of their families and friends.   • Hillsboro Elementary School’s annual Christmas concert will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13 at the Hillsboro Events Center.
  • Holmes United Methodist Church’s live nativity pageant will be held at 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15 and Sunday, Dec. 16 – a week earlier compared to prior years – at the Dwight and Sara Ollman horse arena at 221 22nd St. N.E., Reynolds. The nativity scene features a reading of the Christmas story, singing angels and characters acting out the Christmas narrative. Each performance lasts 15 minutes.
