Keith Meyer seemed destined to open a fireworks business. The owner of Great Plains Fireworks on the southwestern outskirts of Hillsboro grew up loving fireworks shows as a kid.

As an adult, Meyer used to volunteer at Big Top Fireworks near Cummings in exchange for fireworks that he could light off with his family.

Still need convincing?

Meyer, 63, was born on the Fourth of July.

“Back in the old days, when our community was all farmers, July 4 was a time when everyone would all set down their work and have a nice picnic day,” said Meyer, taking a break Monday from readying his business for its public debut.

“I loved watching fireworks as a kid and as soon as I could buy them I would get some and start tinkering around with them.”

Great Plains Firework is the latest venture in Meyer’s winding career path.
