The annual American Crystal Sugar Co. beet harvest kicked into high gear this week.

Growers across the Red River Valley began working around the clock Monday to get the remainder of approximately 377,000 acres of sugar beets out of the ground.

Beet piling skid to a halt Wednesday, however, as rain and snow showers moved across the northern half of North Dakota.

“The rain stopped harvest at all but one of our piling sites, and we have 36 of them,” said Brian Ingulsrud, vice president of agriculture for American Crystal Sugar Company.

“Ideally, we like to be able to keep harvesting without interruption, but it’s not realistic to expect that.”
