The City of Hillsboro has introduced a pet licensing system that will make reuniting lost dogs and cats with their owners easier and less costly, according to one city official.

City Commissioner Levi Reese said the registration system relies on pet tags that carry a unique QR code that can be scanned by anyone with a smart phone.

If pets are registered and have a city-issued tag, information on animals such as their vaccination history and home addresses can be pulled up instantly, Reese said Monday.

“This should make it easier for officers or anybody who catches an animal to know if they have had their rabies vaccine,” he said.
