The board of directors for Dakota Natural Gas has agreed to forge ahead with a $10 million to $15 million natural gas pipeline serving Hillsboro and Mayville.

Greg Palmer, the gas distributor’s chief executive officer, confirmed the board’s vote Wednesday, adding the company would begin the permitting process seeking regulatory approval for the pipeline, which could be built in 2021.

“We have verbal agreements with enough (clients) to make the project work,” Palmer said in a phone interview Wednesday.

Public agencies such as the Hillsboro School Board, Mayville State University, Traill County and the cities of Hillsboro and Mayville previously offered commitments to become natural gas customers.

But the fate of the project received a big boost after American Crystal Sugar’s Hillsboro factory tossed its hat in the ring as a potential natural gas user.
