One of three organically certified cannabidiol oil processing facilities in America started distilling CBD oil from its headquarters in Hillsboro on Monday.

After months of making crude oil from agricultural hemp, employees at 1881 Extraction kicked oil distillation efforts into high gear this week despite the nationwide slowdown caused by the coronavirus.

Becca Dufner of rural Buxton, one of the firm’s investors, said the company has had a slower start than anticipated after announcing plans last August for a multimillion-dollar CBD oil processing facility in Hillsboro.

Waterlogged fields and early measurable snows late last fall – combined with a hemp crop with lower CBD oil content than expected – contributed to a less-than-storybook beginning for the company.

“We had planted 24 acres (of hemp) and it turned out to be a total loss,” Dufner said Monday from 1881 Extraction’s offices along Interstate 29.
