Hillsboro may seek foreign trade zone designation

City leaders in Hillsboro are considering the creation of a foreign trade zone in the city to attract overseas manufacturers to the area.
Hillsboro City Commission President Terry Sando said the foreign trade zone could appeal to companies interested in lowering their customs duties and fees.
Specifically, city officials plan to make a pitch to a European autonomous bus manufacturer about opening a plant in Hillsboro to build their vehicles, Sando said.
“Some of the companies we’ve been reaching out to, it’d be nice” to offer the benefits of being in a foreign trade zone, Sando told the Hillsboro Economic Development Corp.
